7 Do's for Modern Office Style

I get a lot of emails from readers asking for tips when it comes to suiting. Or, more directly, how to make stylish, modern choices in day-to-day businesswear. After some thought, I think the best way to answer this is with a series of posts about the "dos" and "don'ts" of modern, stylish workplace attire.

Style is personal and as long as you work in an industry that allows some personal expression, here's where I like to begin:

  1. Be bold with your shirt and tie combos. Don’t be afraid to incorporate bright color into what you wear underneath your suit.
  2. Pocket squares are one of the most overlooked necessities. They can change the entire look of a suit. Pick one that plays off of the colors in your shirt or tie. If you feel daring, add a second pocket square to a suit with an additional pocket. (Tip: Don't buy a tie and pocket square in a matching set!)
  3. Add a bit of color to your sock selection.
  4. Time for a new hairstyle? Go for the Mad Men, Don Draper side part.
  5. Make a statement in the conference room with the addition of a nice watch.
  6. Add a briefcase to your wardrobe for a more professional look.
  7. Confidence is key. Your suit should demand the same amount of respect as you do
BONUS: Remember that FIT is king. If the suit doesn't fit properly, it won't look good. Develop a relationship with a good tailor and take all of your new suits to them.
